Position Summary
The Companion/Sitter provides comfort, supervision, and emotional support to clients in their homes or healthcare facilities. This role is focused on companionship and safety rather than hands-on medical care.
1. Personal Care & Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Assist clients with bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, feeding, and mobility.
- Provide perineal care and maintain client dignity, comfort, and privacy at all times.
- Encourage and assist clients in performing as much self-care as possible to promote independence.
- Assist with continence care and the proper use of incontinence products.
2. Health Observation
- Observe and report changes in the client’s physical or emotional condition to the supervising nurse or agency staff.
- Monitor client safety, mobility, and comfort during daily care activities.
- Support and assist clients during transportation to medical appointments, if assigned.
4. Environmental & Home Support
- Perform light housekeeping such as laundry, sweeping, and changing bed linens.
- Prepare and serve meals according to dietary needs and preferences.
- Assist with errands, shopping, or organizing supplies as needed.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and comfortable environment following infection control procedures.
5. Documentation & Communication
- Accurately document care activities and observations per agency policy and regulatory standards.
- Communicate effectively with clients, family members, and agency staff.
- Report emergencies, incidents, or unusual client conditions immediately to the supervisor.
- Respect client rights, confidentiality, and professional boundaries at all times.
Qualifications
- Previous caregiving, sitter, or customer service experience preferred (not required).
- CPR/First Aid certification is a plus.
- Ability to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Must pass background checks and meet all health screening requirements (TB test, immunizations, etc.)
- Reliable transportation is required.
- Compassionate, reliable, and patient demeanor.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- Flexible availability (days, nights, weekends, or holidays).
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to lift, move, or transfer clients up to 50 lbs. (with assistance or equipment).
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching during shifts.
- Work in a variety of home and facility environments, which may include exposure to pets, smoke, or allergens.
- Must be able to travel between client homes or assigned facilities as needed.
Supervision
- Reports to the Service Supervisor, Director of Agency, or supervising Registered Nurse (RN).
- All work is performed under the delegation and supervision of licensed nursing staff, in accordance with state regulations.
Physical & Work Requirements
- - Ability to lift and move residents (up to 50 lbs. or more with assistance/equipment).
- - Extended periods of standing, walking, and bending.
- - Work in a variety of nursing home environments with exposure to infection control situations.
Working Conditions
- - Work is performed in patient homes or healthcare facilities.
- - Requires reliable transportation and ability to travel between patient homes.
